Nothing's gonna change my world
Last night's episode of Joan of Arcadia ended with the song Across the Universe. I am not a Beatles fan but they wrote songs back in the day when songs had stories and my respect goes out to them. With Fiona Apple's cover of the song, it took on a different resonance, one that feels like that thin sheet of soothing ice coating something that must be protected and cherished.
Unlike Damien Rice songs which, as fictionboy correctly describes, are by default depressing, Across the Universe is neither happy nor sad. Emotionally, it cannot be pegged in one way. It is what it is and yet anyone can take whatever he or she wants to from it.
The Beatles' embracing of Eastern religion at the time this song was written is very evident. There-ness and fleetingness stare each other at the face. Sorrow and joy are two faces of the equation.
Words are flying out like
endless rain into a paper cup
They slither while they pass
They slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow waves of joy
are drifting thorough my open mind
Possessing and caressing me

Filling my shelves at Shelfari has been a preoccupation of late. It is quite a bummer when the book of choice does not have the actual cover and only that green background with the simple text of the title and author.

A recent observation: I take naps early in the evening and they can stretch from two to four hours. This makes me once again a night owl. Which is great for working at the computer without interruption but not so great when I wake up groggy at mid-morning.
